On the road with Thiemo De Bakker
Door Mats Merkel
My regular and main job is normally with adidas working for the adidas player development program.
And in the past we (sven groeneveld, darren cahill, gil reyes and i) were not allowed to work with players outside of the programm blocks (where we are officially at tournaments on behalf of adidas) except if it is something like a preparation prior to an event.
Due to the fact that there had been many requests for us to travel to some other events the head of adidas global sports marketing has changed the rule/regulation and since Miami 2010 adidas-players can hire us to one or many events that we usually dont go to.
This is the reason why i am at the Gerry Weber Open in Halle with Thiemo. Its not our first trip together, we were working together in Monte Carlo, Barcelona and Rome this year as well.
Today was more a day of getting used to the grass courts! Igor Sijsling was playing qualies today, so Thiemo warmed him up at 12:30 – 13:00. At 13:10 Thiemo had a request from the media here in Halle to do an interview.
At 15:00 he had a hit with the swiss doubles expert Yves Allegro who is playing doubles here with Roger Federer. They played some points and we finished up doing some drills.
Grass is obviously a surface where the ball is bouncing low and coming a lot more through so you want to keep your center of gravity low and move up to the ball as many times as you can.
I had a little present for Thiemo today for his good results in Paris. An ERT 300 which meassures the dynamic tension (dt-value) of the strings. This dt-value determines power and control. Every player has a favorite value and it is about finding this value week for week. It is a great tool, because if you travel every week to a different tournament you have different stringers most of the times as well. And also different stringing machines.
Thiemo had some treatment after the second hit from a dutch physio who works at the ATP.
Thats it for today.
